In June 1965, a group of European economic geologists met in Heidelberg, Germany, at the invitation of Professor G.C. Amstutz, leading to the establishment of the Society for Geology Applied to Mineral Deposits (SGA) and the launch of the journal Mineralium Deposita. The first issue was published in May 1966, and the journal has since become a leading publication in economic geology. The inaugural Biennial SGA Meeting took place in Nancy, France, in 1991, followed by events in Grenada (1993), Prague (1995), Turku (1997), London (1999), Krakow (2001), and Athens (2003). In 2002, the SGA Council decided to hold its 8th Biennial Meeting in Beijing, China, in 2005, marking a significant milestone as the first meeting outside Europe and coinciding with the 40th anniversary of the SGA. This decision reflects the Society's evolution from a European-centric organization to a global one, with 24% of members in North America, 13% in Australia and Oceania, and 5% in Asia. China's remarkable political and economic reforms over the past 27 years have increased its demand for minerals, fuels, and materials, significantly influencing global economic markets.
