The 32nd Austrian Congress in Linguistics in 2004 featured a workshop titled «Empirical Approaches to Discourse Analysis», aiming to unite advocates of various empirical methods in discourse analysis. This initiative encouraged dialogue among diverse disciplines, including Systemic Functional Linguistics, Rhetorical Structure Theory, Conversation Analysis, Social Pragmatics, Argumentation Theory, Critical Discourse Analysis, Multimodal Discourse Analysis, and Corpus Linguistics. The resulting volume encapsulates the productive discussions and interdisciplinary collaboration initiated during the workshop. Through eight concise chapters, contributors illustrate how empirical methods from these frameworks can enhance and enrich contemporary Discourse Analysis. The workshop served as a platform for scholars to explore innovative approaches and foster a deeper understanding of discourse through empirical research.
