Studies of orchestras have been extensive, yet the opera orchestra has received less attention. Research on opera orchestras across various countries and regions enhances our understanding of their historical development and institutionalization, revealing typologies that emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries. The first part of this work consists of case studies focusing on individual orchestras, highlighting the professional, financial, and social conditions of the musicians, which aligns with the subtitle, The Orchestra in Society. Instead of attempting to cover all of modern Europe, this project selects specific regions where opera thrived during the 18th and 19th centuries. This approach aims to recreate and synthesize the geography of European opera, as well as the interconnectedness of European theatres and orchestras within a complex cultural, social, and economic framework. Internal relationships and influences are shaped by various factors, including politics, diplomacy, dynastic ties, migration, and fashion. The selection of regions also encompasses diverse types of theatres and opera productions, such as court, state, municipal, and commercial venues.
