For the European Interreligious Encounter in Rovereto, Italy, in 2008, Johannes Lähnemann, chairman of the Peace Education Standing Commission of Religions for Peace, collaborated with Peter Schreiner from the Comenius Institut Münster to create a European Map of Interreligious and Values Education, along with a handbook featuring project and country reports. This initiative aligns with the encounter's motto, “Shared Values for a Changing Europe.” The map aims to highlight the conditions and developments in various European regions regarding interreligious and values education, emphasizing the importance of these efforts as noted in EU documents. The introduction outlines the challenges and opportunities for religious, interreligious, and ethical learning within public education. It explores potential collaborations between schools, religious communities, and interreligious organizations to combat prejudice, address historical sensitivities, provide accurate information, and foster meaningful exchanges. The handbook includes articles that exemplify initiatives across Europe and discusses the EU research project REDCo, which examines the role of religion in education as a contributor to dialogue or conflict in transforming European societies.
