CAiSE 2008 marked the 20th edition of the International Conferences on Advanced Information System Engineering, continuing the series' success since its inception. This success is largely due to its evolution alongside the growing significance of information systems in economic development. Since the first conference in 1978, organized by Arne Sølvberg and Janis Bubenko, CAiSE has effectively tracked and often anticipated pivotal changes in the field. Modern businesses and IT systems now navigate an increasingly complex environment marked by openness and rapid change, leading to greater diversity in business operations. The surge in information technologies has resulted in a plethora of languages, platforms, devices, standards, and products, necessitating that enterprises effectively manage these dynamics. To achieve sustainable development in their information systems, organizations must adapt to these challenges. Over the years, CAiSE researchers have confronted these transformations, and the conferences have served as a vital platform for presenting and discussing significant scientific findings. CAiSE remains central to these evolving processes, promoting innovative design and evaluation methods, developing new technologies tailored to information systems, and creating novel models, all under rigorous scientific scrutiny.
