The atlas of facial features of European females was developed in conjunction with an established forensic atlas as part of the EU-funded project aimed at enhancing photoidentification methods to combat crime. This atlas aims to standardize procedures in photoidentification. For effective manual identification, a suitable photograph of the suspect is essential. The analysis begins with evaluating the number and quality of recognizable facial features in surveillance images, followed by comparisons with reference photographs. Understanding the frequencies of individual facial characteristics within a population is vital for accurate interpretation, as rare features can indicate a higher degree of similarity. While photoidentification of females is less common than for males, such cases do arise in forensic practice. It is important to note that male facial features and variations cannot be directly applied to females. Thus, this atlas specifically addresses female facial features, providing a standardized framework for documenting traits and their variations, as well as facilitating data collection to establish the frequencies of these features among females.
