In a dynamic computing environment like the Grid, effective resource management is essential for providing distributed resources on-demand without compromising autonomy. This challenge intensifies when dealing with heterogeneous resources across multiple trust domains on the Internet. Current Grid execution environments offer abstract workflow descriptions that require dynamic mapping to actual deployments, highlighting the need for robust resource management. This monograph explores the boundaries of Grid resource management, identifies research challenges, and proposes innovative solutions for on-demand provisioning, automatic deployments, dynamic synthesis, negotiation-based advance reservation, and capacity planning. Capacity planning is approached through multi-constrained optimized resource allocations, modeling it as an online strip packing problem to enhance resource utilization and quality of service while ensuring contention-free solutions. Simplifying abstract resource descriptions enables on-demand provisioning independent of specific installations. The text also discusses the application of semantic web technologies in the Grid for clear, machine-interpretable resource descriptions, facilitating intelligent resource matching and synthesis. This synthesis process creates new compound resources with enhanced capabilities. The techniques presented have been integrated into the ASKALON Grid application development and
