New technologies enable the handling of larger datasets, and monitoring devices are becoming more sophisticated, leading to statistical units sampled over finer grids. As measurement points become closer, data can be viewed as observations over a continuum, referred to as functional data. This type of data appears in various scientific fields, including biomechanics, chemometrics, econometrics, environmetrics, geophysics, and medicine. The inadequacy of standard multivariate statistics for analyzing functional data has prompted the development of specialized methodologies known as Functional Data Analysis (FDA). Currently, FDA is a highly motivating and popular statistical topic due to its significant impact on critical societal issues such as health and the environment. Consequently, the FDA community is expanding rapidly alongside statistical advancements. Regular meetings are essential for reviewing recent progress in this intriguing area. This collection features selected and extended papers from the second International Workshop of Functional and Operatorial Statistics held in Santander, Spain, from June 16-18, 2011.
