The study aims to clarify scholarly aspects of prehistoric calendars. It investigates selected objects and buildings with a proposed calendar function, examining their publication methods and associated scientific issues. Limited observations of celestial bodies cannot substantiate calendars that require written documentation. Instead, the likelihood of calendars must be assessed through an understanding of living conditions and available sources from a given period. Evidence suggests that prehistoric communities in Central Europe lacked both the need and the means to develop calendars. Despite this, calendar-related papers enjoy popularity among the general public. Engaging images ensure that the content is often understood through illustrations and captions alone, leading many readers to overlook the complexities of mathematical reasoning. Consequently, there is a significant risk that the concept of "calendars in prehistory" may be uncritically integrated into the established archaeological canon. Academic journals tend to be overly permissive regarding idealized representations and insufficient source criticism in calendar-related contributions.
