Research on online dictionaries has been limited, despite the growing market for them amid declining sales of printed references. This volume addresses the need for empirical data on their usage and user-friendliness. It is organized into four parts: The first part reviews existing empirical studies on digital dictionaries and provides methodological guidelines for researchers. The second part presents findings from two studies exploring general usage questions, including contexts of dictionary use, user expectations, and innovative features like multimedia elements and adaptive interfaces. The third part includes specific studies, such as an eye-tracking evaluation of the OWID dictionary portal's web design and a log file study examining the correlation between word frequency in lookups and corpus appearances. It also investigates user perceptions of illustrated online dictionaries that combine written paraphrases with images. The final section focuses on monolingual dictionaries, particularly the German online dictionary elexiko, featuring two questionnaire-based studies. Conducted through online surveys and laboratory methods like eye-tracking and log file analyses, these empirical studies cater to lexicographers, metalexicographers, and linguists interested in online dictionaries and empirical research methods, making it relevant to a broad expert audience engaged in this evolving field.
