Hot rolling of twin roll cast strips - insights into product quality and roll life

Más información sobre el libro

This work aims at the improvement of the hot rolling operation during twin roll casting in regard to product quality and roll life. This was done by analyzing the product, process and a comparison between a theoretical simulation and real operational results from a laboratory and a pilot scale facilities. For the product, the necessity of a hot rolling operation in terms of quantification and closure of cast strip porosity as well as the influence of different casting parameters on the tensile and hardness properties of the cast and cast and hot rolled product are given. A process window of operation based on the logbooks of an industrial scale pilot caster is defined. Special attention was given to roll surface deterioration and to roll bite lubrication, which is considerd as a major opportunity for extending roll life. The process was simulated to improve the understanding of the process and help characterize the frictional situation at the roll gap. This simulation was validated with real process measurements. The analysis of real process data helped identify the changes in the frictional situation during hot rolling caused by different process variables.
