The third seminar on Intelligent Manufacturing Systems was held to further the systematic work instigated at the second seminar: to develop a scientific foundation for manufacturing systems for the factories of the future. The three most important topics discussed during the seminar were: Knowledge Engineering and AI Techniques Applied in Manufacturing; Maintenance Expert Systems, Research, Development and Applications; Advanced Machines, Software Products Theory and Education for the Factory of the Future. The contributions in this volume summarise the theory, research, development and initial experiences in the application of the elements of Intelligent Manufacturing Systems, representing the factories of the 21st century.
