The earthworks often cause substantial impact on the the environment both locally and internationally. Environmental Impact Assessment facilitates sustainable development by recognising the negative impacts of the project and identifying negative impacts as well as the mitigation measures before the construction of the project can even commence. Public participation enhances good management practices as the communities feel that they are part of the project and therefore owns it and as a result the project is never sabotaged
