Although coal mining in the East Midlands has ceased, the legacy of how the miners worked and communicated must live on. The language used by miners in their daily lives cemented the relationship between them and reinforced the strong friendships of these men. Here for some to discover and for others to bring back memories of those times spent underground are a selection of Pit Talk words and phrases accompanied by definitions in the form of a glossary. The authors also recorded many miners’ recollections of times both above and below ground and some of their work is included to give the reader a flavour of what it was like to be a miner.
