In 1718 London, pregnant and unmarried Eliza seeks refuge with the mysterious apothecary Black, who employs her as a maid. Unbeknownst to her, Black has sinister intentions and uses her for his experiments, hoping to gain scientific recognition. As she uncovers his secret, it may be too late for her.
