Inspired by Greek mythology, this orchestral tone poem tells the tragic story of Phaeton, son of Helios, who seeks to prove his lineage by driving his father's sun chariot. His ambition leads to chaos as he struggles to control the chariot, threatening the earth's destruction. To prevent catastrophe, Zeus intervenes with a fatal bolt. The score is a newly engraved edition by Richard W. Sargeant, Jr., showcasing the dramatic narrative and emotional depth of this 1873 composition.
