Set against the backdrop of the 1810 Aztec uprising, the story follows young Juan Martez, who becomes an orphan in a tumultuous environment. Facing execution by the Spanish, his fate changes when a Spanish gunmaker recognizes his talent with gunpowder and purchases him to produce munitions.
