The great initiation ceremony has just ended, and Tladi (Lightning) is not only chosen leader of his regiment, but given title of "Great" an unprecedented archievement for someone his age. This breeds resentment among some of his peers especially his main nemises Makopela. Following an attempt on the young warriors life which almost succeds but leaves the warrior grotesquely deformed a human leopard known as Kahuru emerges.
