Scott wrote a considerable part of "Marmion" when he was in quarters with the volunteer cavalry that he had helped to raise, 1797, against the imminent invasion of the French.Scott's influence is seen among others in the works of James Fenimore Cooper, Alexandre Dumas, and Aleksandr Pushkin.
