Když jsou určité události podány určitými lidmi určitým způsobem, můžeme doufat, že na ně každý z nás získá určitý názor. Položíme-li tyto určité názory vedle sebe, zjistíme, že se do určité míry (tj. i diametrálně) liší. Pokud tento výsledek určitý počet z nás překvapí, snad mu pomůže, že za tím, nad tím i pod tím stojí všemocná sekta iluminátů, tahající za nitky světového dění. Jak tato sekta (jejíž původ i sama existence jsou značně nejisté) působí, nedává spát dvojici detektivů Saulu Goodmanovi a Barneymu Muldoonovi, kteří se odhodlají přijít jí na kloub a zaútočit na její Achillovu patu – pokud nějakou má.
