What could be better during the golden age of boating on the Thames than a relaxing row up the river? So think J., George and Harris – not forgetting Montmorency the dog – but little do they suspect the mishaps, the scrapes and the japes that lie along the winding way. From becoming impossibly lost in the maze at Hampton Court to battles with tins of pineapple chunks, all the while attempting to limit the destruction wrought by the mischievous Montmorency, Jerome K. Jerome's classic novel of humorous misadventures and comedic authorial digressions is a paean to the banalities of everyday life and has entertained readers for more than a century.

'I did not intend to write a funny book, at first' wrote Jerome J. Jerome of Three Men in a Boat, which has since become a comic classic. When J. the narrator, George, Harris and Montmorency the dog set off on their hilarious misadventures, they can hardly predict the troubles that lie ahead with tow-ropes, unreliable weather-forecasts, imaginary illnesses, butter pats and tins of pineapple chunks. Denounced as vulgar by the literary establishment, Three Men in a Boat nevertheless caught the spirit of the times. The expansion of education and the increase in office workers created a new mass readership, and Jerome's book was especially popular among the 'clerking classes' who longed to be 'free from that fretful haste, that vehement striving, that is every day becoming more and more the bane of nineteenth-century life.' So popular did it prove that Jerome reunited his heroes for a bicycle tour of Germany. Despite some sharp, and with hindsight, prophetic observations of the country, Three Men on the Bummel describes an equally picaresque journey constrained only 'by the necessity of getting back within a given time to the point from which one started'.

A to obzvláště těm kopřivnickým. Miroslav Macek k této knize dodává: „Trvalo téměř rok, než jsem náhodně narazil na zajímavou ranou historii prvních Benzových automobilů a pojal nápad vyslat Jeroma, Jiřího a Harrise na cestu do Kopřivnice – Nesseldorfu a namísto anglických reálií popsat tehdejší prostředí německé, české a moravské. Výsledek usilovné práce (zvláště týkající se detailů tehdejších železných tratí, nádraží a reálií měst) máte před sebou a doufám jen, že vám opětovně přinese zábavu a trochu toho poučení.“

Tre uomini in barca. Tre uomini a zonzo
