    Cartoonist Riad Sattouf tells of the first years of his childhood as his family shuttles back and forth between France and the Middle East. In Libya and Syria, young Riad is exposed to the dismal reality of a life where food is scarce, children kill dogs for sport, and his cousins, virulently anti-Semitic and convinced he is Jewish because of his blond hair, lurk around every corner waiting to beat him up. In volume 2, Riad, now settled in his fathers hometown of Horms, gets to go to school, where he dedicates himself to becoming a true Syrian in the country of the dictator Hafez Al-Assad.     Píše se školní rok 1984–1985 a Rijád nastupuje do školy. Zatímco v prvním díle (1978–1984) putoval malý hrdina se svou rodinou mezi Libyí, Bretaní a Sýrií, druhý díl je především o životě v Sýrii. Rijád se učí číst a psát arabsky, objevuje svou syrskou rodinu a nové kamarády, a přestože je stále blonďatý a stráví dvoutýdenní prázdniny v Bretani, chce se stát dokonalým Syřanem. Zaostalý a konzervativní syrský venkov, drsná škola v Ter Maalehu, nákupy na černém trhu v Homsu, nabubřelé večeře u bratrance, megalomanského prorežimního generála, procházky starobylou Palmýrou: v tomto díle se zanoříme hluboko do podivné každodennosti rodiny Satouffových ovlivněné životem v diktatuře Háfize al-Asada.

    Šestý a závěrečný díl autorovy komiksové bibliografie zastihuje protagonistu a vypravěče Rijáda na prahu dospělosti. Budoucí úspěšný kreslíř si ve francouzském provinčním městě Rennes a později v Paříži klestí cestu k profesionální kariéře, hledá vlastní umělecký výraz a současně se snaží zbavit strachů, komplexů a traumat, které ho tíží už od dětství a od puberty, prožitých mezi Evropou a Sýrií. Nakonec zjistí, že chce-li minulost přerůst a skutečně dospět, bude se přece jen muset vyrovnat s problematickou postavou svého syrského otce, jehož stín ho neustále pronásleduje. Zbytek Rijádovy rodiny se mezitím musí srovnávat se životem bez nejmladšího syna, uneseného do Sýrie, i s postupným stárnutím a umíráním starší generace. Završení úspěšné série je opět plné humoru, pronikavých sociálních postřehů i existenciálně silných momentů – a také konečně na pozadí krvavé občanské války v Sýrii dává odpověď na to, jak těžké může být posbírat dohromady rodinu roztrženou mezi dvěma kontinenty a kulturami.
