      Guardiniho pozdní dílo Ctnosti (orig. Tugenden, 1963) je zralým plodem myšlení a životních zkušeností hlubokého myslitele. Téma je pojato v šíři a hloubce, která se nedotýká pouze speciálních problémů teologické disciplíny. Problém je tu položen jako něco, co hluboce souvisí se životem a lidskou kulturou obecně. O cíli této své knihy autor v jejím úvodu napsal: „Nauka o mravnosti se až příliš stala naukou o tom, co je zakázáno; tyto úvahy mají spíše učinit zadost velikosti a kráse dobra. Příliš často se také hledí na mravní normu jako na něco, co přistupuje k rebelujícímu člověku zvenčí; zde se má dobro chápat jako to, co z člověka, který je uskutečňuje, činí člověka v pravém smyslu. Mladého Glaukóna mistrova slova uchvátila, byl nadšený a plný úcty. Cíle této knihy by bylo dosaženo, kdyby si čtenář uvědomil, že poznání dobra je důvodem k radosti.“
