Stefanie Hartmann and Joachim Selbig teach bioinformatics courses at the University of Potsdam. For their undergraduate course they wanted a textbook that introduced students to the field of bioinformatics, with a focus on the analysis of sequences and structures. Because they use the Linux operating system and the statistics software R for the computer exercises, they also wanted an introductory text on these topics. Since the authors couldn't find a book that contained the exact mix of things they are teaching in their course, they decided to write their own. Their book also contains computer exercises, the data for which can be downloaded from the companion web-site.

Hope Jenkins - Psychologin und Profilerin im Dienst der Polizei - bekommt es mit einem Fall zu tun, der einem schlechten Horrorfilm gleicht. Gemeinsam mit Detective Jamie Heargraves, ihrem besten Freund aus Kindertagen, nimmt sie sich der Ermittlungen an. Die Opfer sehen immer gleich aus: eine wohlgeformte Figur und lange, blonde Haare. Sie werden entführt und über Tage hinweg gefoltert. Von jedem Opfer wird ein Souvenir zurückbehalten. Der Mörder ist gut, sehr gut sogar, denn er hinterlässt keinerlei Spuren. Somit führen die Ermittlungen in keine Richtung und Hope und Jamie stecken fest. Noch dazu bekommt es Hope mit dem charmanten Casey zu tun, der seinen Vater getötet haben soll. Irgendwas scheint faszinierend an ihm, doch Hope ist sich sicher, dass es nichts mit dem Fall zu tun haben kann.
