Technological advances have led to new biochemistry-based test procedures, including DNA micro-arrays, rapid sequencing, and various applications of polymerase chain reaction. However, the limitations of these tests and the challenges of standardization and validation for detecting agents and toxins, diagnosing diseases, and ensuring quality control of biological products must be acknowledged. This volume presents proceedings from a conference in Saint-Malo, France, aimed at fostering dialogue among government authorities, industry representatives, scientists, and users of these techniques. It covers the principles of novel methods, the necessity for standardization and validation, and their applications in diagnosis and surveillance. The discussions also highlight the certainties and uncertainties in identifying agents or toxins, along with examples of quality control in human and veterinary biological products. Participants developed conclusions and recommendations regarding the advancement and standardization of these technologies, which are included in these proceedings.
