In January 1933, the author witnessed widespread povery vanish as Hitler rose to power. He was encouraged to join the Hitler Youth and shortly after, with the outbreak of WWII, he found himself leaving home to serve his country in the hostile waters of the Gulf of Finland as a member of the Kriegsmarine.
