4e de couv.: This volume presents the results of a pioneering anthropological documentation of hitherto unknown traditions of sacred music performed by marginalised musicians and priest-musicians of the Bora Sambar region of western Odisha. The work is based on ethnographic research in rural regions of western Odisha conducted between the years 2002 - 2010. The study presents the first documentation of a unique sound culture of India, Odisha. Local music is analysed as an indigenous theory, thus as a crucial medium of religion, culture and politics.

Wheeler presents the Navajo Nation Museum's unique approach to researching and presenting culture, followed by P. Bolz's reflection on the categorization of Native American art. R. Hatoum discusses the concept of musealizing dialogue. In the Indian context, K. Kumar Chakravarty introduces the Living Museum Movement, while G. Devy offers insights on the Museum of Voice. V. Die Universitäten stehen vor einem tiefgreifenden Wandel, dessen Auswirkungen ungewiss sind. Zu den Herausforderungen zählen die Föderalismusreform, der mediale Umbruch, neue internationale Studiengänge und ein zu erwartender Anstieg der Studierendenzahlen um 2011. Dieser Tagungsband entstand aus einer von der VolkswagenStiftung geförderten Konferenz zur Situation des wissenschaftlichen Nachwuchses, bei der junge Talente mit Vertretern von Universitäten, Forschungseinrichtungen und Stiftungen über aktuelle Anforderungen diskutierten. Es wird erörtert, welche Wege beschritten werden sollten, um Nachwuchsforscherinnen und -forscher erfolgreich zu fördern und zu verhindern, dass sie in eine berufliche Sackgasse geraten. Professoren und Studierende sehen sich zunehmenden Reglementierungen und Anforderungen gegenüber. Drittmittel müssen akquiriert, internationale Kontakte gepflegt und interdisziplinäre Verbindungen geschaffen werden, während der Wettbewerb um die besten Universitäten intensiver wird. Der Band bietet Anregungen für notwendige Veränderungen und Verbesserungen, damit junge Wissenschaftler auch in Zukunft mit Begeisterung in Deutschland forschen und lehren können.

Featuring contributions from anthropologists, historians and political scientists working on South Asia the volume introduces “power plays” in various local contexts – rural and urban alike. Addressing the question of “en-Act-ment” of power the authors look at ritual(-ized) and often overtly performative acts – negotiations, elaborations, struggles – over resources and prestige, which are dramatized by using various cultural media and often, though not necessarily, linked to a divine sphere. Special focus is given to entanglements between the seriousness of “power”, the social as well as symbolic forces, on the one hand and the much less grave, less solemn, rather joyful “play” on the other hand. Frequently encountered and locally rarely perceived as inherently contradictory, the “power plays” introduced here hint at specific local, indigenous understandings of politics, rituals and performances.

From the comparative perspective on cultures one can observe that music is used not only in religious adoration and worship but also in rituals of personal and collective crisis. Music as non-verbal religious communication acts as a social form of cultural consolation, commemoration, recollection and the representation of ideas and values as well as a marker of cultural and personal identity. This collected volume aims to formulate impulses for the study of religions, rituals and the aesthetics of religions.

In ihrem Buch beschreibt die Ethnologin und Religionswissenschaftlerin Lidia Guzy die Struktur und Ausbreitung einer neuen asketischen Lehre in Indien. Das Buch zeigt exemplarisch Prozesse der Institutionalisierung von Religion und die Kreativität lokaler Kulturen, die Tradition und sozialen Wandel verbinden. Dank Reisen mit zwei Asketen konnte die Autorin den Alltag von Asketen und die Struktur eines asketischen Ordens ergründen. Durch das Leben bei Neukonvertiten in den Stammesgebieten konnte sie das ekstatische Profil der Lehre studieren, das vor allem durch Gesangsekstasen ritueller Spezialistinnen geprägt ist. In der Askese der Mönche lebt das populäre hinduistische Askese-Ideal weiter. Mit der Ekstase ritueller Spezialistinnen bleiben lokale Praktiken des südasiatischen Schamanismus bestehen. Das gesellschaftlich Neue zeigt sich stets in der neuen Ethik der abstinenten Lebensführung. Das Buch veranschaulicht auf eine vielfältige Weise Prozesse des sozialen Wandels und Werte der kulturellen Kontinuität im Indien der Gegenwart. Es ist sowohl für interessierte Laien als auch für Indien-Spezialisten gedacht. Die Autorin führt den Leser in einen fremdkulturellen Kosmos ein, ohne auf die historische und theoretische Einbettung der beschriebenen religiösen und kulturellen Phänomene zu verzichten.
