The Cathedral of Christ the Light in Oakland, California, completed in 2008, explores the significance of a cathedral in the third millennium and its impact on sacred space and architectural form. Designed by Craig W. Hartman of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP, it merges ancient geometries inspired by nature and early Christian symbols with cutting-edge computational design, resulting in a luminous, inviting structure for its diverse, Pacific Rim community. Since its inauguration, the cathedral has garnered international recognition for its innovative architecture, its integration of urban and natural ecologies, and its redefinition of sacred space for modern society. The design emphasizes light, incorporating the Christian fish symbol within its geometries and utilizing glass, wood, and concrete. A glazed, bivalve exterior surrounds the building, while fritted glass softens light and solar heat. Inside, a forty-meter-high vaulted wooden ceiling features an oculus that connects the interior to the sky, with aisles radiating toward a rectangular altar. The striking omega window behind the altar was created using a unique technology that digitized a Romanesque relief from Chartres Cathedral, allowing a laser to perforate aluminum panels and produce an eighteen-meter-tall pixilated image of Christ, visible only through natural light. This richly illustrated monograph showcases the first cathedral designed and constructed entirely
