Focusing on the Tangwang language, this book presents the first comprehensive English grammar, detailing its phonology, morphology, and syntax. It addresses a significant gap in existing literature, which previously had limited resources. Utilizing an interdisciplinary approach, the study explores genetic data for historical migration patterns and examines the influence of the Dongxiang language due to Silk Road interactions. The conclusion posits that Tangwang remains distinct, highlighting the predominance of syntactic borrowing over lexical borrowing in language contact scenarios.

This volume provides general linguists with new data and analysis on languages spoken in China regarding various aspects of space and quantification, using different approaches. Contributions by researchers from Mainland China, Hong Kong, Japan, Europe, the United States and Australia offer insights on aspects of language ranging from phonology and morphology to syntax and semantics, while the approaches vary from formal, historical, areal, typological, and cognitive linguistics to second language acquisition. After separate volumes on space and quantification in languages of China, the studies in this volume combine space and quantification to allow readers a view of the intersection of the two topics. Each article contributes to general linguistic knowledge while discussing a particular aspect of space or quantification in a particular language/dialect, offering new data and analysis from languages that are spoken in the same geographical area, and that belong to various language families that exist and evolve in close contact with one another.

This book presents an investigation of language contact, focusing on Northwestern China. It breaks down the barrier between human sciences and natural sciences in order to reconsider the diversity of languages on the basis of the latest research findings from genetics, linguistics, and other domains, offering valuable insights into when and how the divergence of languages and genes began and language and gene admixture and replacement occurred. The book focuses on language evolution between the border of Gansu and Qinghai Province in China, but the research doesn’t neglect the area beyond China’s northern borders. Manchu, a dying language belonging to the Tungusic group, is also studied to enhance our understanding of language replacement. This work is the result of a four-year collaboration between teams of geneticists and linguists in France and China.

Plural marking, numeral classifiers and reduplication constitute the main means of quantification marking in the domain of grammar. The contributions in this book focus on the typological correlation between the three different strategies for quantification, as well as on some general issues. A better understanding of the quantification strategies in the languages of China will enrich our comprehension of human language and thought. The book is expected to have an impact on the study of linguistic typology, language contact, and patterns of the evolution.

Im Zeitalter der Globalisierung steht die von westlichen Experten dominierte Kunstwissenschaft vor neuen Herausforderungen, nicht zuletzt aufgrund sich stetig verändernder Bedingungen in der Kunstproduktion. Neue Ansätze im Rahmen der Postkolonialismus-Studien sprechen sich für offene kulturelle Konzepte aus, die in der Verhandlung und Übersetzung von kulturellen Differenzen, abseits nationaler Grenzen, eine Chance für die Zukunft sehen. Vor diesem Hintergrund untersucht die vorliegende Arbeit anhand ausgewählter Positionen wie Yin Xiuzhen, Miao Xiaochun und Huang Min die zeitgenössische chinesische Kunst im Sinne einer transkulturellen Kunstgeschichte als eine Gegenwartskunst unter globalisierten Bedingungen, die in sich heterogen ist und zugleich lokale und internationale Dimensionen aufweist. Auf diese Weise soll ein differenzierter Blick auf die Gegenwartskunst in China ermöglicht werden, der abseits des eurozentrischen Diskurses liegt.
