Na prvom liste Šafárikových "Slovanských starožitností" čítame vetu rímskeho historika Plínia, ktorú Šafárik použil ako motto. Tieto myšlienky povzbudzovali jeho náklonnosť k slovanskému vlastenectvu, ktoré sa snažil vyjadriť skúmaním slovanskej starobylosti a kultúry. Vlastenectvo bolo pre Šafárika inšpirujúcim a pretrvávajúcim prvkom pri výskume slovanských dejín, literatúr a jazykov. Opísal dva hlavné dôvody, ktoré ho motivovali pri skúmaní starých slovanských dejín: stav poznania odborných literatúr a jeho osobné záujmy. Považoval doterajšiu neslovanskú, najmä nemeckú spisbu za zastaranú a nevyhovujúcu, pričom spozoroval predpojatosť autorov voči slovanskému svetu. Slovanská historická spisba bola mladšia, súvisiaca s nedostatkom vzdelanosti, a chýbala jej zdravá kritickosť. Jeho osobné dôvody pramenili z lásky k slovanstvu a záujmu o jeho dejiny a jazyky. P. J. Šafárik sa snažil objasniť a opísať najstaršie dejiny Slovanov, aby vyzdvihol ich pôvod a rast. Jeho bádateľské úsilie viedlo k dielu, v ktorom na základe dobových prameňov predložil poznatky o pôvode, sídlach, dejinách, povahe, zamestnaní, náboženstve, spoločenskom poriadku, jazyku, písme a umení Slovanov. Skĺbil pritom vedomosti predchádzajúcich bádateľov s vlastným skúmaním.
