A Contribution to the Selection and Dynamic Configuration of Modular Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams
    • The chemical and biochemical industry faces intense competition, driving the need for accelerated plant design. In module-based design, appropriate P&ID modules are selected from a database rather than creating custom designs, allowing for engineering reuse. However, an automatic configuration method for dynamically generating modular P&IDs has yet to be established. This work aims to create a selection and dynamic generation approach for modular P&IDs. The arrangement rules for selected P&ID modules and their graphical relationships are stored in a flexible heuristics database, utilizing generic functions inspired by Allen's interval Algebra. Possible arrangements are topologically sorted using sorting algorithms, leading to the derivation of the modular P&ID and its connectivity with process units from flow diagrams. A script, developed in collaboration with Siemens AG, illustrates the generated modular P&ID in a sequential order on P&ID flowsheets. This approach provides a platform for generating modular P&IDs, demonstrating reduced space requirements on flowsheets and flexibility in module exchange. The method enables the dynamic generation of modular P&IDs, independent of the CAE tools employed.
