Die Familie des Gordon Grice muß Nerven wie Drahtseile haben oder ihn sehr lieben. Nicht nur, daß sie mit ihm kreuz und quer durch Amerika zieht und bevorzugt in Gegenden lebt, in denen die nächsten Nachbarn sich als Schwarze Witwen, Gottesanbeterinnen oder Giftschlangen entpuppen. Nein, diese netten Geschöpfe Gottes werden auch als Hausbewohner geschätzt, zwar einigermaßen sicher aufgehoben in Terrarien oder Einmachgläsern, aber diese können bei Unachtsamkeit auch mal zu Bruch gehen, und dann heißt es beherzt zupacken. Grice erweist sich als genauer Beobachter und witziger Führer durch eine Welt, in der Sex in Kannibalismus endet, Spinnen geduldig auf der Lauer liegen, um dann um so gnadenloser über ihre oft größeren und stärkeren Opfer herzufallen und sie mit Gift zu lähmen, und Hunderte von Klapperschlangen sich wohlig in trockenen Brunnen aneinanderkuscheln, um gesund und tatkräftig über den Winter zu kommen.
