Es wurde eine Einzelfallstudie durchgeführt, wobei das Asian German Sport Exchange Programme (A.G.S.E.P.) in Sri Lanka im Mittelpunkt der Untersuchung stand. Die Ergebnisse deuten darauf hin, dass die Freiwilligen ein hohes Interesse am Sport zeigten; die Bedeutung der Organisation als Sportorganisation wurde jedoch nur von den Studenten aus den Bereichen Sportwissenschaft, Pädagogik oder Management hervorgehoben. Studierende, die nicht aus dem Sportbereich kamen, hoben den Entwicklungsaspekt der Organisation als wichtigen Faktor für ihr Engagement hervor. Diese Untersuchung deutet darauf hin, dass Freiwillige im Bereich des Entwicklungssports instrumentelle Ergebnisse von ihrer Teilnahme erwarten, wie z. B. den Erwerb neuer Fähigkeiten und Kenntnisse, das Knüpfen von Kontakten, die Verbesserung ihres Lebenslaufs, die persönliche Entwicklung, die berufliche Entwicklung und das kulturelle Engagement.
