The history of the founding and development of the Catholic Church in the South Pacific is the tale of strongly motivated men and women who went out to spread the Gospel in a region with thousands of islands. In spite of years of planning and preparation the beginnings were extremely difficult. Sailing from Europe to south west Oceania via South America with a stopover in Chile took about a year in the 19th century. Nevertheless the hardships, frustrations and setbacks have not been in vain. The prints of the footsteps of those messengers have resulted in clearly visible and lasting imprints of God’s presence in the ocean. Frans Lenssen is a Mariannhill missionary from the Netherlands who came first to Papua New Guinea in 1971 and has been involved in missionary work and teaching. He studied theology at the University of Wuerzburg (Germany) and holds a M. A. (Theol) from the University of Nijmegen (Netherlands) and a licentiate from the Pontifical Biblical Institute in Rome. He recently retired from lecturing at the Catholic Theological Institute of Port Moresby.

De geschiedenis van het Missiehuis St. Paul op het landgoed Klein Vink te Arcen begon in 1911. Vanaf zijn grondlegging was dit huis bedoeld als een opleidingsinstituut in Europa voor missionarissen van de jonge in 1909 gestichte Congregatie van de Missionarissen van Mariannhill in Zuid-Afrika. De in dit boek verzamelde artikelen van verschillende auteurs beschrijven het verloop van deze stichting volgens het verloop van de seizoenen, lente, zomer en herfst. De geschiedenis van het missiehuis wordt vanuit verschillende gezichtshoeken belicht wat onvermijdelijk tot overlapping van bepaalde episodes leidt. Daarmee komen er evenwel verschillende aspecten beter te voorschijn. Een eeuw geschiedenis van St. Paul toont aan dat aan de doelstelling van de stichting zeker is voldaan. Talrijke missionarissen zijn van hier uitgegaan en hebben wezenlijk bijgedragen tot de groei en bloei van de Katholieke Kerk in verschillende Afrikaanse landen en in Papoea Nieuw Guinea. Terugblikkend op de geschiedenis van wat deze missionarissen tot stand hebben gebracht en hoe het nu verder gaat, geldt het woord dat Jezus op zijn volgelingen toepast: «Wij zijn onnutte knechten; we hebben gedaan wat we moesten doen.” (Lk 17,10). Want «als de Heer het huis niet bouwt, bouwen de mensen voor niets.’’(Ps. 127,1).
