    • The industry initiative Climate Protection through Recycling (Circular Economy) e. V. is an association of members from all relevant organizations of the waste and recycling industry as well as large and small, private and municipal waste management companies but also other actors from NRW. With the founding of the association the waste management industry in NRW has set itself the objective to jointly continue to develop their climate-related innovations and technology, services, projects and objectives under this one roof, and thus also supporting KlimaExpo. NRW a project of the Government of North Rhine-Westphalia on a long-term basis. This way, the successful transformation process of the disposal industry will continue, and recent significant contributions of the recycling economy towards climate protection can be secured and expanded even further.

    • The Sugarcane Industry in Brazil is responsible for generation of different types of organic wastes. Bagasse and small share of straw have already been used as solid fuel in co-generation systems in general. Meanwhile, there are other kinds of by-products, as filter cake and vinasse, which have been completely unused from the energy point of view. The idea of converting such unused wastes into additional energy is gaining attention, especially driven by some Government commitments on increasing the renewable energy generation combined with the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions. The anaerobic digestion process is able to contribute with additional renewable energy production, in the form of electricity from biogas or even biomethane, keeping meanwhile the current practice of recycling the nutrients contained in these wastes on the sugarcane fields. However, for a successful application in industrial scale, the anaerobic digestion process must be carefully evaluated in terms of selection of appropriate inoculum, process kinetics, and plant design, among other aspects.

    • Public-Private-Partnership (PPP) is a valuable and perspective instrument to enable infrastructure investments. They require cost efficient approaches, reliable fee collection structures with sufficient revenues and an effective and cooperative institutional set-up at the public side. If those conditions are not ensured the private sector will consider the shortcoming as project risks, what is reflected in the price offers. In this regard poor areas with very little existing infrastructure and corresponding large investment demands do not provide favourable conditions for private investors. Those cases still require assistance by donors or central government.

    • Mechanical Biological Treatment (MBT) is a generic term for the integration of a number of waste management processes such as materials recovery facilities (MRF), refuse derived fuel (RDF) production, mechanical separation, sorting, composting and pasteurising. In order to minimise environmental nuisance for odour, fly and noise nuisance, these facilities are required to be housed within a building and normally under negative pressure. The use of bio-filters is also required to treat any odour problems. The MBT process is designed to take residual or black bin waste and process it so that valuable recyclable materials can be separated out and the biomass or. compostable. element is separated out and processed through an In Vessel Composting (IVC) or an Anaerobic Digestion (AD) system.
