Salomon Sulzer (1804–1890) war der erste Chasan im modernen Europa, der durch seine außerordentlichen musikalischen, intellektuellen und charismatischen Fähigkeiten bestach. Er war eine Autorität in seiner Gemeinde und ein Anziehungspunkt im allgemeinen Musikleben seiner Zeit. Die Folgen seines musikalischen und gesellschaftlichen Beitrags sind noch heute in der jüdischen Musikwelt spürbar. Als Obercantor – seiner Berufsbezeichnung in Abgrenzung zum Kantor – am Wiener Stadttempel entwickelte er eine gemäßigte Reform der Liturgie und Synagogalmusik, die Tradition und Moderne unter Einhaltung des jüdischen Gesetzes in Einklang brachte.
