Translated by Barbara Komorowska The ethnography of historiography developed in communist Poland is a consequence of the ‘anthropological turn’ in historiographic and methodological studies and an aspect of the ethnography of modern thought in the field of history. This is a proposal of an anthropological view of history as a field of culture. The ethnography of modern thought in the field of history combines reflections classically preserved for the history of historiography, methodology of history and cultural anthropology. Dealing with the case of Górski and reconstructing his vision of the world and man allows for an interpretive reconstruction of the cultural ‘piece’ of historiography developed in the Polish People’s Republic and sketching a fragment of its ‘cartographic image’ and diagnosis. The diagnosis concerns the phenomenon of anthropologising history, whose local variants can be observed in historiography developed in communist Poland.

Monografia realizuje autorski projekt badań historiograficzno-metodologicznych, inspirowany postulatem Clifforda Geertza o badaniu myślenia w kontekście współczesnego życia, co autor określa jako etnografię myśli współczesnej w historii. Badane „wielkie kwestie” obejmują klasyczną i nieklasyczną historię, centrum i peryferie, antropologizowanie historii, granice dyscyplinarne, polityzację historii oraz różne podejścia do źródeł i archiwów. Monografia, nawiązując do Wittgensteina, tworzy złożoną strukturę, w której poszczególne rozdziały są ściśle związane z refleksją teoretyczną i praktyczną nad współczesnymi zmianami w historiografii. Autor odpowiada na potrzeby historyków, zachęcając do namysłu nad kreacją „obrazów przeszłości”. Etnografia myśli współczesnej w historii stanowi interesujący projekt badawczy, który pozwala na nowe spojrzenie na historiografię i jej zmiany. Recenzje podkreślają znaczenie pozycji jako wskazania kluczowych obszarów refleksji w polskiej historiografii oraz w szerszym dyskursie o przeszłości. Autor konsekwentnie odnosi się do antropologii jako punktu wyjścia do rozważań nad celami i warsztatem badań historycznych, co czyni tę monografię istotnym wkładem w współczesne debaty.

Translated by Barbara Komorowska In contrast to the already published works in which I implement the ‘programme’ of the ethnography of historical thought, in this book, I have shifted the emphasis from ethnographic descriptions and thinking by means of large issues to thinking about great issues. Shifting the emphasis makes it possible to give a dimension of perceived realism to large issues – to think realistically and specifically about them. At the same time, it causes a change in the nature of ethnographic descriptions. They are no longer so ‘thick’. This means that this work is neither an autotelic nor a mixed case study. What I present in this monograph is an analysis of ethnographic information. It makes it possible to get to know the people from which it comes, as much as it makes it possible to primarily know the cultural world in which we all live. Ethnographic information comes from conference statements and views expressed in discussions and monographs. Usually, I extract non-key statements from them from the point of view of their authors. Being specific social events, they are explored and treated as telling something about large issues present in the study of the past.
