Set in 19th Century Edinburgh, the story follows Lauchlin Mackinnon as he leaves his family tenement in search of fortune. His journey takes him from various jobs to the army, where he participates in the British re-capture of the Cape of Good Hope. However, a deviation in orders leads him to the Spanish Vice-royalty of the River Plate. Amidst his adventures in what will become Argentina, Lauchlin faces a romantic dilemma involving the daughter of a prominent colonist, forcing him to choose between love and home.
