Matei Vișniec concibe la literatura como un espacio de libertad, inspirándose en Kafka, Dostoievski y los surrealistas, y rechazando el realismo socialista. Cree en la resistencia cultural y en la capacidad del teatro y la poesía para exponer la manipulación ideológica y el lavado de cerebro. Su poesía rumana temprana se destacó por su lucidez y amargura, aunque sus primeras obras de teatro tuvieron prohibiciones de escenificación. Tras emigrar a Francia, comenzó a escribir en francés, y desde entonces sus obras se han representado internacionalmente.
