Tato kniha se stala biblí homeschooleru a unschooleru již od svého prvního vydání v roce 1981. V roce 2003 vyšla aktualizovaná verze, kterou edičně připravil Holtův kolega a současný prezident Holt Associates Patrick Farenga.
Holt si pragmaticky uvědomoval, že těch, kteří chtějí učit své děti sami, bude vždy menšina, a právě proto poukazoval na to, že podpora těchto rodin a spolupráce s nimi je pro tradiční školy přínosem, a ne hrozbou.
