Novela přináší vyprávění o čtyřech starých mužích, které kdysi pojila velmi pevná pouta: tři z nich byli bratři, dva přátelé na život a na smrt. Pouta se zpřetrhala, když jeden z nich z touhy po dobrodružství utekl z domova. A vrátil se až jedné soboty, po 56 letech. Teprve pak si vyjasňují mnohé, co je pálilo ve vzájemných vztazích, a shledávají, že některá pouta nezpřetrhá ani čas.
