These events, often viewed as threats to masculine order and commerce, became vital spaces for women’s work and social interaction. Despite efforts by city officials to impose regulations based on gendered views of morality, the fairs persisted, playing a crucial role in shaping the identities of ordinary Londoners and reflecting broader societal dynamics.
