As the pandemic prompted increased calls for support, the book was revised in 2020 to engage parents and children, encouraging them to explore the screenplay together and address the challenges of remote learning and emotional well-being.
Spirit Horse II serves as the original of Carousel Horse, featuring a diverse cast of characters that blend the experiences of various riders, trainers, and volunteers. While some incidents are based on real events, others are fictional or inspired by similar occurrences. The author’s journey of healing began after a debilitating staph infection, where horses played a crucial role in her recovery. The ranch depicted is a combination of numerous programs developed over the years by the author and fellow equine therapists. A pivotal moment occurred when the author, while working with a severely abused horse, recognized that if this animal could learn to trust and rebuild its life, so could she. This realization laid the groundwork for Spirit Horse. The program has since evolved to collaborate with psychiatrists, therapists, physical therapists, special education teachers, and families, including veterans and first responders. In partnership with Horses4heroes, the initiative offers free rides to veterans, aiming to provide moments of peace and healing for them and their families. Horse owners and therapy stables are encouraged to participate in this project, sharing the therapeutic benefits of horses with those who have served our country. Whether through grooming, feeding, or riding, the healing power of horses is profound, and all involved with horses are invited to contribute to this meaningful cause.
