Juan Escoto Erígena, teólogo, filósofo neoplatónico y poeta irlandés, es hoy mejor conocido por su obra, La división de la naturaleza. Este texto es considerado el logro final de la filosofía antigua, sintetizando quince siglos de logros filosóficos. Erígena defendió una concepción panteísta de la naturaleza y fue uno de los pocos filósofos europeos de su época que dominaba el griego. Su pensamiento representa una profunda síntesis de las tradiciones intelectuales antiguas.
