Živoucí přítomnost je jedna z nejznámějších knih amerického muslimského konvertity a mystika Kabira Edmunda Helminského. V ní se autor vyznává ze své náklonnosti k mnoha z bezbřehého oceánu myšlenek, jež se slévají v jeden z významných proudů klasického i soudobého islámského náboženství – totiž v islámskou mystiku, v odborné literatuře známou též pod názvem súfismus. Kabir Helminski zasvětil svůj životní příběh jedné z vrstev islámu, jejíž projevy a argumentaci nejen sdílí, ale sám se na její kultivaci podílí. V určitém okamžiku si vybral právě mystický proud islámského myšlení a životního stylu – nikoli například sféru konformní legalistické věrouky, jež jen nerada toleruje, když si věřící usměrňuje svůj duchovní život cestou přesahů do sféry alternativního prožívání Boží zvěsti. Nevydal se ani směrem fundamentálního a předem odmítavého vnímání světa jinak než v zájmu doslovné a strohé interpretace svatých textů ve jménu přísně vyžadované „naší pravdy“.
