The German capital is characterized by a lively, heterogeneous and innovative architectural scene with high technical and design standards. "Building Berlin" serves as a showcase of Berlin’s architectural output. Each of the eight categories that structure the book features essays on current issues – trends and developments that provide reflective insights to the summaries that accompany the exemplary collection of around 70 projects. The chapter on residential architecture, for example, discusses the interest of creative urban clients in the highrise apartment buildings of the 1960s and 1970s that were frowned upon for a long time. Another essay focuses on the different aspects of corporate architecture as “constructed logos”. Other topics include the importance of archeological display areas for urban planning, new chances for architecture through privately sponsored museums, and current trends in student dormitory buildings.

Baukultur in und aus der Hauptstadt | The latest architecture in and out of the capital

New architectural impulses: recent buildings in the German capital by local architects as well as international projects by architects based in Berlin, complemented by essays on topics that are currently being discussed in the world of architecture. 60 projects demonstrate how the new paradigm of conversion is a real turning point, rather than a short-lived trend. Examples include an apartment conversion that allows a family to remain in their home, triple-star cuisine in exceptional surroundings, smart updates for old schools, transformations, repair measures and all manner of add-ons, as well as a roadmap for the climate transition of an entire city: conceived in Berlin for places all around the world. This volume is a call for a diverse, multi-layered, socially orientated and therefore sustainable planning culture that involves and includes everyone. Eight essays discuss various phenomena: whether women live differently, the story behind Berlin's pink piping, how dinosaurs change a location, what the architectural world is fighting for by the River Spree, where Berliners sit down, and how the city will affect even remote rural areas.

Baukultur in und aus der Hauptstadt | The latest architecture in and out of the capital

New architectural impulses from BerlinWhether new buildings, additions, or restructuring – construction never stops in Berlin, demonstrating the diverse way in which building culture contributes to society’s development. This volume presents examples of these current projects in Berlin and around the world, conceived and designed by architects, urban planners, interior designers and landscape architects of Berlin. More than ever before, the main focus lies on the sustainable preservation of existing structures. Renowned authors present essays highlighting the value of the constructed environment we already have. They demonstrate how even buildings earmarked for demolition can become exciting homes, how clever ideas can breathe new life into apparently outdated old buildings, and how transport and open spaces can be integrated into increasingly constricted urban settings.

    • A newly revived building boom has again turned Berlin into an exciting place of experimentation in contemporary architecture. The city's controversial high-rise developments, ingeniously designed floor plans in residential buildings, landscaping influenced by social and ecological considerations and creatively conceived monument conservation projects are followed with great interest across the world. Discussions among both experts and the general public are geared towards reaching an understanding regarding which projects can be called successes and how these buildings contribute to the life of the city. This volume presents the most interesting works both within and beyond the German capital designed by Berlin architects. This carefully curated selection is complemented by essays on selected themes, elaborating on the specific Berlin aspect in the international context: A discussion of the adaptation of intelligent house automation for private dwellings, the integration of climate protection into industrial areas, or the collaboration of architecture and art.
