Please Don't Touch My Hair follows 18 real-world characters with diverse hair textures and protective styles during a day at the park as they confront racism. The book aims to teach children the power of their voices, how to stand against microaggressions, the importance of body autonomy, and self-respect through example. It fosters pride in their kinky, curly, and thick hair while encouraging them to defend it. Every day, children encounter a world that often undermines their self-confidence regarding their hair, skin, and features. The author reflects on her own experiences growing up as the darkest girl in a multicultural household, where people would touch her hair without permission, making her feel like an exhibit. This lack of acknowledgment from her parents contributed to her self-hate. Recognizing that the world is not designed for them, elders must help instill confidence in the younger generation, as confidence leads to successful careers, lasting friendships, and courage. The story is penned by Jyla Yu, a young author who debuted with "My A Pride Story For Kids With Curly Hair" at 19. An American children's author, poet, and public speaker, she is passionate about children's literacy and self-love, currently studying to become an English teacher and working on her fourth book.
