Dobrodružný příběh plný bojových umění zachycuje Čínu v době zanikajícího císařství a počínající modernizace země. „Labužník“ zachycuje ve zkratce dějiny Čínské lidové republiky poznamenané politickými kampaněmi a „modernizací“ v duchu komunistické utopie. V 80. letech, kdy obě novely vznikly, se staly v Číně literární senzací, neboť se zde zábavnou formou píše o věcech, které byly do té doby tabu. Českému čtenáři novely přibližují zlomové okamžiky moderních čínských dějin a zároveň mu dávají okusit umění starých vypravěčů s jejich smyslem pro humor a barvité detaily. Lu Wen-fu (1928–2005) a Feng Ťi-cchaj (1942) patří k nejvlivnějším čínským autorům poslední čtvrtiny 20. století.
