Schon zu Lebzeiten erwarb sich Georg Friedrich Louis Stromeyer (1804 – 1876) auf den Gebieten der Kriegschirurgie und des militärischen Sanitätswesens große Verdienste. Aber vor allem gilt der Arzt und Gelehrte als einer der Begründer der orthopädischen Chirurgie - sein größter wissenschaftlicher Beitrag ist die Etablierung der subkutanen Myotomie und Tenotomie in der Chirurgie. Stromeyer entstammte einer bedeutenden niedersächsischen Arztfamilie, die innerhalb eines Jahrhunderts acht Ärzte hervorbrachte. Louis Stromeyer hatte seit 1838 nacheinander den Lehrstuhl für Chirurgie an den Universitäten Erlangen, München, Freiburg und Kiel inne. Er war außerdem Generalstabsarzt der schleswig-holsteinischen und der Hannoveraner Armee. Auf literarischem Gebiet war er außerordentlich fleißig. Seine Werke sind von sprachlicher Eleganz und Gewandtheit sowie klar und präzise dargestellt.
