Alfred C. Haddon

Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Embryology The name of embryo (or foetus, in mammalian embryology) is restricted to the unborn young. At birth the young may closely resemble the parent, or be very dissimilar; in the latter case, it is known as a larva, and undergoes a series of changes or a meta morphosis before it attains the adult state. Even closely allied animals may be born at very different stages in their development; the higher animals are, however, generally born at s relatively later stage than those lower in the animal scale. They are thus better fitted for the struggle for existence, and expend less energy during their development than if they had to provide for themselves.
